Monitor Usage Of Your Peripherals Competitively With WhatPulse

For those of you unfamiliar with the word, don’t feel stupid. A peripheral is a device connected to your computer that is not actually required for your computer to boot up and get running. Any USB device is a peripheral. In this specific instance, your keyboard and mouse are the main peripherals you should know of.
In my 13 years of internet experience, I can’t even imagine how many keys I’ve pounded or how many times I’ve clicked that poor mouse. Using WhatPulse now, it’s not something I have to imagine. I can know exactly how much usage I’ve put on those peripherals. Why would I want to? Personally, no particular reason. It’s interesting to know and keep track of. It’s also fun as an idle way of “competing” with thousands and thousands of other internet addicts, as it ranks each user.

Download WhatPulse now!

WhatPulse is available for Windows, OS X, and Linux. It’s very simple. Download the application, create your user account, and it’ll begin closely monitoring your keystrokes, mouse clicks, and your mouse movement (unless you choose to disable the tracking of any of those in the settings). I know, the first thing that comes to your mind is, “Isn’t that unsafe?” WhatPulse is safe. Do your research on Google if you’re feeling paranoid at all. WhatPulse was, at one point, open source software until a fiasco came about where users were cheating keystrokes and clicks. I’ve used WhatPulse for nearly five years and I haven’t experienced a single problem. This isn’t the largest keylogging operation in the world.

WhatPulse’s options are quite configurable.

monitor peripheral devices

You’re able to configure a lot of activity with your tray icon, to notify when tracking is active and on other triggers. There’s also several different ways you can “pulse,” which is sending your current counts to the server for tracking. You can do that manually, by clicking the tray icon, by hitting a hotkey, or at a specific time limit.

peripheral monitor
As mentioned earlier, there are ways to selectively track only certain statistics.
WhatPulse also offers the “geek window,” which is an optionally-transparent overlay that you can dock at one of the corners of your monitor to keep track of your WhatPulse statistics in realtime. I think it’s overkill, and I’m not that obsessed with where I stand in the rankings, but have at it.
Key frequencies are also a very cool feature. I’m on my gaming desktop right now, and here’s what a gamer’s key frequencies might look like after about 2 weeks:
peripheral monitor
There’s a little under a million keystrokes, with lots of WASD and other directional buttons. What can I say? It’s an interesting thing to monitor.
Every user is given their own online profile. You can access your profile easily by the tray icon. My profile link is as follows: http://whatpulse.org/stats/users/227470/
Here’s what your profile will look like, if you can’t be bothered to click:
monitor peripheral devices
Should you decide to give WhatPulse a spin and find out that you like it, why not join the MakeUseOf team on WhatPulse? The team ID is 20178 and you should be able to freely join in over at the Teams page.

How To Install Proprietary Graphics Drivers In Ubuntu & Fedora [Linux]

ubuntu graphics driver
Hi Friends! R U   Linux user? Lets you have a pretty cool choice – open source or proprietary software. While a lot of die-hard Linux users will scream at you if you use anything proprietary (and I recommend not using proprietary software unless absolutely necessary, but that’s still your choice), you can still install whatever the heck you want.

There are a good amount of proprietary products that are being made available for Linux, both free and paid, and they aren’t going away anytime soon. But because Linux allows the best of both worlds, you may also be curious about the proprietary drivers that are available.

Why Do You Possibly Need Proprietary Drivers?

In virtually all distributions, only open source drivers that come with the Linux kernel are used out of the box. While this should be perfectly fine for simple use (and it should work on any graphics setup), AMD and nVidia users may still feel the need to use the more powerful proprietary drivers so that games, videos, and more all play as smoothly as possible.

Intel users shouldn’t feel left out. Intel doesn’t offer any proprietary drivers, but instead pushes all of its work directly to its only set of graphics drivers, which are open source and included with the kernel.

Ubuntu

ubuntu graphics driver
Ubuntu users have the easier route to getting these drivers installed. You’ll simply need to open your dash, menu, etc. and look for the Additional Drivers application. This little program will look to see if you have any hardware in your system that could be better supported through proprietary drivers. While it may also include wireless drivers, this is usually the place for the proprietary graphics drivers.

Simply click on which you’d like to install (I’d usually go with the latest), and apply.

If you like a more technical route, you can technically find the fglrx package for AMD cards and nvidia-glx-xxx for nVidia cards (where xxx is the version number, like 185), but I recommend using the Additional Drivers application as it takes care of everything, and I’ve run into problems just installing fglrx through the package manager instead of through Additional Drivers.

Fedora

ubuntu graphics driver
Fedora users have it a little more difficult, but it’s very manageable. First, you’ll need to head over to this site and install the free and non-free packages for your version of Fedora. These packages will add information about the repository which hosts the proprietary drivers, as the default repositories of Fedora are open-source only. Once that completes, you should now be able to search for kmod-catalyst for AMD cards or kmod-nvidia for nVidia cards.
This is a package that keeps track of dependencies and kernel modules, so whenever you install a new kernel it’ll update the drivers as well. Install, restart, and you’re up and running!

Conclusion

While I’d love to see proprietary-quality open source drivers, I highly doubt that something like that will ever occur. For those who need to use all of the horsepower their cards provide (especially when you have a higher end card; weaker/older cards are usually 100% supported), using the proprietary drivers is still the best way to go.
Please note that using proprietary drivers should work fine unless you have an AMD card while running Gnome 3. Until the problem is fixed, your performance while running Gnome 3 will be quite sluggish even though it’ll still run. If you run into this problem or any other issue, you can always uninstall the proprietary drivers and revert back to the open source drivers.
Do you prefer open source or proprietary graphics drivers? Do you think proprietary drivers should be open sourced? Why or why not? Let us know in the comments!

Back Links ! - How to Get Links for Free?

Yes! Back links are still one of the most coveted items for all webmasters who are into SEO and there are good reasons for it. Besides Google's effort to crush down on link sales, buying links is often not a feasible option for small webmasters.Under such situation most webmasters would often resort to link exchange or spamming blog and guest books. But they are to no good ! So what other ways can a website get back links and that too for free?

There are actually more than one ways to get good quality free back links to your website.

a) Directory Submission : Submit your website to good quality directories. There are plenty of directories that are free yet useful. Try to make a list of them and submit to them in accordance to their T & C. Most directories would approve your listing if you follow their guidelines properly and you end up with a bunch of good free backlinks. To check for a good quality directory, remeber the following:
  1. A good directory would never ask for a link back
  2. Try to find how old the directory is -- the older the better
  3. Check the number of sites already submitted - the more the number of sites the better it is
  4. Check if the site links to websites that are potetial bad neighborhoods.

b) Blog & Social Media: Create a blog of your own. Believe me it is far better than spamming other's blogs :D In almost all SEO related websites it i preached that content is the key to success because search engines love content and good contents gain links. What better way would you have to present your good content to potential linkers than postin it in your blog? It is important that you create a blog as a part of your domain, i.e, if your domain is http://www.example.com/, you can have a blog as http://www.example.com/blog . This helps to transfer the power of the free back links that you get in your blog to the main domain also.

Create good content on your blog and submit them to the social media websites like Digg, Del.icio.us, Reddit etc. If your content is really good, you are sure to get a host of Free back links. ( this reminds me, probably I should make my next post on what is "Good content").

c)RSS Feeds: Generate a RSS feed and submit it to the RSS directories. On the Internet people are hungry for content, there might be a bunch of people waiting to put your RSS on their website and thus provide you with a bunch of free backlinks.

d) Article Marketing: Write short articles about your product / service / industry and submit it to the various article directories. These article directories would allow you to put your link in the article or in the author's byline. The best part is in most of these cases you can link back to your site with your choice of anchor text and again its all for free :)

e) Press Release: We all know what press releases are meant for but an advantage that we should not overlook is that a press release would always contain a link back to the website. So a well circulated press release is equals to a bunch of Free back links.

f) Website Review: There are various websites and forums that conducts review of website/product/services. Submit your website to these and with each review you are sure to get atleast one free back link. ( Drawback: if your product/service quality is bad you might get some negative review which in turn can affect your business)

g)Freebies: For those webmasters who can afford or are technically very strong; offer free widgets, templates and other freebies that people can use on their website and blogs and ask them for a link in return. Most of them would happily link back to your website for a good free wordpress template or a fancy widget.

How To Make Money With Facebook

If you always wanted to earn online income but didn’t know where to start, why not jump on the most popular social network site and take advantage of their ad serving platform?

Believe it or not, tens of thousand of people are using Facebook every day to chat with their friends and have fun… while others are making money at the same time.
Would you like to know how to cash-it on this social phenomenon?
Would $5… $50… or $150 in additional income make you happier? What would you do with the “new found” money?
Let’s make it happen, here are three quick steps:
Step #1
Once you have signed up to Facebook your first step should be to think about how you want to present yourself. You don’t want to fake it, just be yourself and showcase your skill, your hobby or knowledge – that is what makes money from Facebook.
Don’t forget that you want to attract the attention of a specific group of people here, so that you become known as someone who is something of an expert on one particular subject. So choose wisely!
Step #2
Go for a popular niche that you personally like and have an interest in. Develop your persona in that area. If you already have something of a web presence in a particular area then you’ll use that in your advantage because — it will help you as more and more people become aware of who you, your skill/knowledge and how this can help them.
Step #3
Your first port of call, if you have anything second hand to sell which is related to your niche, is the Marketplace. It’s free to place ads in the Marketplace and there is no limit on how many you can place.
EXAMPLE: you come across a bargain lot of books on your subject on eBay or at a yard sale you can list them all individually on Facebook and sell them on for a profit.
If you have a budget to spend on advertising and you have some external websites you want to promote, you can try out the Social Ads to see what benefits you get from them. It is well worth reading through the relevant help section to see what is involved though, as it is quite in depth.
FACEBOOK BEST ADVANTAGE:
The main benefit of becoming a Facebook member is that you can build and use any number of applications to perform certain tasks on your profile page.
The GREAT NEWS is that Facebook doesn’t frown at users making money from their Facebook page, and indeed many people link in to other websites outside of Facebook itself.
People are constantly building new applications and often they are used by many other users to create pages that appeal to their own particular needs.
This is partly why you will succeed in making more money from Facebook if you brand yourself carefully before you get started on the site.
BRANDING YOURSELF?
Figure out what it is you want to do and what you want to achieve. If you already have a website up and running then you will be able to link into that, so keep the look and feel of your Facebook page in the same vein as your site.
But while you can link to other sites outside of Facebook, some people also sprinkle some affiliate links on their actual Facebook page itself. For example, some quick research revealed one person who links into a range of ClickBank products on their page and does well from doing so.
So long as you start from a strong position with a particular focus and brand in mind, you can do well by experimenting with all the benefits that Facebook offers (and they’re growing).
Take time to build up a network of friends and make sure you become known for being an expert in your particular sphere of interest/niche.
Exposure is what you should aim for. The more people you make friends with and add to your network, the more money you should be generating. However, don’t make the mistake to go after “friends” for money.
Put people first, money will follow. It’s like in the real life, just a different medium, the same communication skills and principles apply though.
You should always sound, look and act real, don’t pretend to be someone else. People feel it nowadays more than ever.
