computer power supply

Do you want to learn about computer power supply connectors? In my opinion, computer power supply connectors can be pretty confusing for the newbie when setting up a new PC.

Get these connections wrong, and you'll have some funny LED lights or behaviors in your PC.
Some of these connectors also lead to your on/off switch for the PC, and if not hooked up correctly, may send your machine into a constant bootup and shutdown sequence - not a good thing to have. I've had that problem before with my power supply.
In this article, we'll take a look at power supply connectors so you have an idea of what they are and how they function.

1. Best Source Of Information
First up, what's the best source of information to learn about computer power supply connectors? It's definitely the motherboard manual. Most motherboard manuals have specific instructions on how to hook up the computer power supply connectors to the motherboard. Review the manual carefully to make sense of those connectors.

Some computer power supply connectors
2. Types Of Power Supply Connectors
What are the types of computer power supply connectors, you ask? Well, here they are:
Power to hard disk drives There are connectors which power the hard disk drives - you hook these up directly to the power suppy unit using the power cables supplied.

Power to the CPU The CPU is powered by a power supply connector hooked up to the motherboard. This is usually a small little connector you need to be familiar with your motherboard manual to ascertain what connector this is.

Power to graphics card Most of the heavy duty graphics cards in PCs have a separate line to power them. The power supply connector to graphics cards might come from the power supply unit, or the motherboard.

Power to computer beeper Notice how your computer 'beeps' when you first boot it up? That beep sound is powered by a computer power supply connector. You usually hook that connector between the motherboard and the power supply unit.

Power to LEDs and lights Your computer case will have LEDs and lights to indicate activity in the computer (e.g. hard disk drive activity). To power these lights, there are some small power supply connectors between the power supply unit and the motherboard as shown below
Power supply connectors for your computer case's lights

Power to floppy and optical drives Your floppy or optical drives will need to be powered by computer power supply connectors. These are usually hooked up between the drive and the computer power supply unit.

3. Be Careful With The Power Supply Connectors
Whenever you're dealing with the computer power supply, please ensure that you've grounded yourself properly. Very often, I hear of motherboards being short-circuited simply because the user forgot to ground himself or herself before meddling with the computer power supply connectors.

Conclusion
And that's it! All you want to know about computer power supply connectors. You'd definitely want to read up on these connectors in your motherboard manual in order to understand more. Until next time, happy computer building! You may also want to check out more information on your PC's power supply unit.

Why A Monitor Goes Blank

If you boot up your computer and see that the monitor goes blank, don't panic! Computer monitors are a critical element of your PC. So be sure to understand how they work and you'll save yourself a lot of headache and pain.

When I first started to learn to troubleshoot PCs, I found a blank monitor to be one of the most frustrating things I encountered. With the screen blank, there's not a whole lot you can do except to hit the power off button, check the connections and hit the power on button again.
In this article, we'll look at the top 5 reasons why a monitor goes blank. Once you understand the reasons, you'll understand how to troubleshoot the problem more easily.

1. Introduction
Computer monitor problems can be very hard to troubleshoot - I mean, if your monitor goes blank, how do you check anything on your screen. So that's why it's important to have 2 monitors in the house. Usually, if I have my desktop PC's monitor going blank, I'll immediately hook up the video card to another monitor. If the screen remains blank, then it could point to a video card problem. If the new monitor displays an image, then it's probably the first monitor that has run into problems.

A typical computer monitor - don't panic if it goes blank!

Reason 1: Wetness
The number one reason why computer monitors go blank is - wetness. Believe it or not, when your computer monitor is exposed to humid air, sometimes water can condense and accumulate in the monitor. This causes the monitor to malfunction and go blank. I've had this happen to my desktop PC at least three times before. What you need to do is to leave the monitor alone for some time and allow the water to evaporate. That usually solves the problem.

Reason 2: Faulty Graphics Card
The next reason why your computer monitor goes black is due to a faulty graphics card. The best way to detect this kind of problem is to connect up a new monitor to your PC, then check if you have a blank screen. If you continue to have a blank screen, then it's likely your video card is faulty.

Reason 3: Faulty RAM
This one is less obvious and less common, but it can happen. You might sometimes get bad RAM modules which prevent your PC from booting up even to the basic BIOS startup screen. To detect this kind of problem is more troublesome, you might need to remove those RAM modules and insert them into another computer.

Reason 4: Loose Connections
Another reason why your monitor goes blank is due to loose connections. The connection from the monitor to the mains is usually a culprit, as is the connection between the monitor and the video card. Check those connections before you declare your computer monitor as faulty.
Reason 5: A Short Circuit In The Motherboard
And the final reason why your computer monitor goes blank? It's possibly because of a short circuit in the motherboard. This is the most undesirable outcome of course, as you might have to replace your entire motherboard. However, it's possible that this can happen - so keep your fingers crossed and hope it doesn't happen to you.

Conclusion

And there you have it, the top 5 reasons why your computer monitor goes blank. Make sure you do a mental check of the above points the next time your monitor goes blank - don't be too quick to declare your monitor as faulty. Until next time, happy computer building!

How To Transfer Data From Your Primary Hard Drive To A New Hard Drive

If you're just beginning to build your own computers, one problem you might encounter is how to transfer data from your primary hard drive to a new hard drive.

The process itself is not complicated, but it can be confusing if you've not done it before - and especially if you have a large amount of data to transfer. This is a common tasks when  building a new computer.
As always, practice makes perfect - do this a couple of times and soon you'll have no issues transferring data from one drive to the next.
In this article, let's look at how you can transfer the data from your main hard drive over to a new one.

1. Get A Good Imaging Software
The first thing to do when you want to transfer data from your primary hard drive to a new one is to get a good imaging program (my favorite is  Acronis True Image). Imaging software is very important because it backs up your computer hard drive's data into an image, then enables you to restore it into another hard disk. Perfect for what we're trying to accomplish here.

Using  Acronis True Image to image your hard drive

2. Do A Backup Of Your Data
Once you've installed the imaging program, just image the entire primary hard drive into an image. This image can usually be stored on a DVD - I suggest you do that instead of storing the image on a hard drive. Once the backup image is prepared, do an integrity check by seeing if the files you backed up are still there. Good imaging programs like Acronis True Image allow you to explore individual files in a backup image.
3. Restore Data To New Hard Drive
Right. Next step is to take that backup image on the DVD, and restore it onto the new hard drive using your imaging program. This process should only take maybe 10 minutes (much faster than copy the data directly from hard drive to hard drive). And that's all you need to do to transfer data from your primary hard drive to a new one.

Transferring data from one hard drive to another is not difficult
4. An Alternative Solution?
Well, you might think that an alternative solution is to just copy data from your primary hard drive onto an external hard disk, then copy the data onto a new hard drive. No can do! Direct copying of data is not only slow, it does not bring over many of the settings you need. The only sure way to bring everything across to the new hard disk (short of a complete re-format of the OS) is to use an imaging program.
Conclusion
And that's all there is to it. All you need to know about how to transfer data from your primary hard drive to a new one. Remember that the above process is not as complicated as it seems - do it once and you'll be more confident in subsequent trials. Until next time, happy computer building!
Want to unlock more mysteries of the venerable computer hard disk? Here's an excellent guide.

Windows 8 Tablets with 720p Cameras, 10GB of Free Memory

Windows 8 tablet PCs will have to arrive on shelves with a minimum set of components, the newly published hardware requirement documentation for Windows 8 logo certification shows.

Windows 8

With such requirements in place, Microsoft wants to make sure that upcoming devices will not lag in performance, and that users will have the experience intended.

This is not something new for Microsoft, as the company adopted a similar approach with Windows Phone (some suggest that these limitations might have prevented the OS from taking off).

For example, these tablet PCs will have to pack a minimum of 10GB of internal memory after the initial setup process completes and all things are up and running.

Moreover, Microsoft imposes that there will be a 720p-capable camera packed with these devices. Tablets will also have to pack Magnetometer, Gyroscope, Accelerometer (3 axes w/ data rates >= 50Hz), and Ambient Light Sensor (1-30k lux capable w/ dynamic range of 5-60K).

When it comes to graphics, Direct3D 10 device w/ WDDM 1.2 driver is a requirement. The screen will have to deliver a minimum 1366 × 768 pixels resolution and will have to support at least 5 touch points.

Windows 8 tablet PCs will also have to have WLAN and Bluetooth 4.0 + LE (low energy) connectivity packed inside, as well as NFC (Near Field Communication) and USB 2.0. Speakers will also be part of the mix, as well as the UEFI system firmware.

On x86-compatible Windows 8 PCs, Microsoft imposes a two seconds resume feature to be implemented. Since ARM is new to the Windows space, it makes sense in a way for Microsoft not to impose such strict requirements for tablet PCs powered by it.

Another new feature that Windows 8 will come with on tablet PCs is the option to press Windows Key + Power instead of the Ctrl+Alt+Del sequence. The on-screen keyboard will remain an option as well, WithinWindows notes.

Another important feature that Windows 8 users will enjoy is the support for no-reboot upgrade of graphic card drivers. There will be no more XDDM drivers in Windows 8, but only WDDM drivers, which make the feature possible.

Find Out About Your Headphones

Headphones

Headphones are great to use to listen to music, while watching television or viewing a movie, and when using your personal computer. There are thousands of applications where you can use headphones. There are a lot of brands and types that you can choose from nowadays, depending on the application.

Basically, a headphone has three parts: the driver, the earpiece and the attachment system. The driver is the ‘sound producer’. It is a transducer which converts electrical signal to the audio sound that you hear once you place the headphones on your ears. The earpiece is the physical part which you put to your ears. There are a lot of types of earpiece that you can choose from. Finally, the attachment system is the part which holds everything together. This can either be the headbands - for types which have one - or the wires which hold two ear buds together. The job of the attachment system if to make the earpiece somehow fit your ears.

Headphones can be attached to any music player, to mobile phones or to a personal computer. If you want to get rid of the outside noise and you just want to concentrate on the sound, there are noise-canceling variants that you can choose from. The open-type headphones generally have better sound quality than the noise canceling type.

When it comes to the design of the headphones, then you can choose one that will best suit your application. Clip-on headphones do not have headbands, the earpiece can easily be attached to your ears. There are also wireless headphones that are available. Ear buds are made up of earpieces that can fit the inner part of your ear. Headsets combine the functionality of a microphone and an earphone. Street style headphones are best used for music-listening purposes. Ear pads have two flat pads as earpieces. With all the designs and brands available in the market now, you will surely find the type of headphones that will best suit your need and lifestyle.
